Is breakfast cereal really good for you?
The truth is, the answer is no.
Cereals are packed with ingredients such as sugar, GMO components, colourings and artificial vitamins.
Printed onto the breakfast cereals label are usually sugar, fructose, cocoa sugar, corn syrup or dextrose. All the ingredients mentioned above are sugar. This is why cereals taste delicious.
Comparing to natural vitamins, artificial vitamins are made in a laboratory and are less easily absorbed by our body.
GMOs (genetically modified organism) cereals are genetically engineered and they are far away from organic.
Food colouring is added to make cereals look additionally beautiful.
“Healthier” cereals such as Special K and Fiber One offer lower calorie alternatives with less sugar. How did these food brands do it? They included artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium, which is not good for our body.
Why do people still eat breakfast cereals?
In America alone, 94% of the families will have a breakfast cereal stored in their cabinets. That is 9 families out of 10! If breakfast cereals are so unhealthy, why do we eat it?
The reason is because companies like Quaker and Kelloggs very often persuaded us through advertisements that we need these nutritious breakfast cereals. As breakfast cereals are very easy to prepare, having a bowl of cereal will definitely fill up our empty morning stomach before we head to work or school.
Any breakfast alternatives?
There are a lot of great breakfast options besides breakfast cereal.
Fruits such as apple or banana are great. For protein, you can consider almond butter. Smoothies and real oats are way much better than breakfast cereals. With these breakfast alternatives, you don’t really have to eat breakfast cereals every morning.
